Rewriting a Book Series

July 19th, 2023

I’m rewriting a series of books that I originally put out in 2020. It’s been on my list of things to do for a long time now. Someone in my mailing list pointed out, sometime back in 2022, that a minor point didn’t make sense in the third book. They are seemingly the only ones that ever noticed it. The reviews are good, sales are good, but once it was pointed out to me, I couldn’t see anything else.

So now I’m redoing it for a series-wide second edition. Here’s why.

There probably won’t be a lot changing in the first two books, although there are some minor alterations. All three books are told from the perspective of a species of aliens and one of their characteristics is that they don’t use contractions when they speak. It was a simple affectation, but even though I tried to keep it consistent, I’ve found that I missed a couple so those are being removed. I’ve also added a couple of sentences here and there, not that changes the overall story, but that makes things clearer. I’ve now finished 14 chapters in the first book out of the original 28 and by the end of next week, I figure, I should be ready to get onto the real hard work in book 3.

I’m not going to explain what the problem is, since if hardly anyone has noticed so far, why would I point it out? I doubt this is going to change anyone’s enjoyment of the overall story, it’s just bugging me. I had just finished writing another book and I was well-underway planning the next trilogy when I stopped all of it and decided that I had to get this done. It’s been sitting in my to-do list for over a year. If I don’t force myself to do it, I never will.

Therefore, this is going to be a couple of weeks revamping into what I hope will be a much better product. I’ve commissioned all new covers for all three books because I was never thrilled with the last version. That was my fault. Originally, and I’m trying not to give anything away here, but the first cover included a particular piece of technology that I realized, after sending all of the information to my cover artist the first time, it gave away a big plot point in the book. Therefore, I stopped him, revamped the imagery and he substitued the new design for the old. It looks great, but you can see where he digitally swapped things around if you know what was originally there. Nobody in the world does except him or me, but that’s always bugged me, so we’re doing a take two.

Eventually, this will go out to my beta readers, I’m going to explain what the problem was, and see if anyone has any further suggestions, but  since none of them realized the problem on the first pass, I doubt it. Then, it’ll go up with new covers to replace the old versions, both individual books and the ebook boxed set. I am probably not going to announce it to anyone but my mailing list, where I’m going to offer free ebook replacements to anyone who bought the original set if they want it. I doubt anyone but the one person even knew there was a problem. We’ll see how it goes.

Usually, I don’t do this, but it’s something that just got in my head and wouldn’t let go. Therefore, the next series is going to take a little longer to come out, maybe 3-4 weeks behind. I apologize for that, but sometimes, you just have to do what you have to do. This is something I have to do so I’m doing it.
