Okay, stop me if you’ve heard this before but it seems like the vast majority of YouTube woodworking channels have entirely stopped doing woodworking. At least, that’s true of all of the ones that I watched. Now, it’s on to home improvement projects, metalworking and the like and I’m just sitting here wondering what the hell happened?
So would someone please explain?
Now keep in mind, this is a lot of them, not just one or two. Now I don’t watch a whole lot anymore, mostly because most of what’s been done hasn’t been that interesting, but it all seems to have gone south. Matthias Wandel, the biggest woodworking channel on YouTube, has stopped making pretty much anything out of wood. He’s mostly fixing things and doing electronic projects on his second channel. Pask Makes is off to metalworking almost exclusively. That’s not why I watch him. Matt Cremona is building an extension to the house. Jay Bates has mostly gone to a secondary channel where he’s barely active at all and DIY Tyler, who isn’t even a woodworking channel per se, he’s been building decks and duck blinds.
Where is the woodworking?
Yes, I know wood has been expensive in the wake of the pandemic but it isn’t like they stopped using wood, they’re just not doing “woodworking”. It’s almost enough to make me unsubscribe from all of them.
I mean seriously, it can’t be that hard to just make stuff. That’s where they make their money, after all. Even Steve Ramsey over at Woodworking for Mere Mortals, he’s left actual woodworking behind in favor of just doing interviews with other people who, likewise, aren’t actually woodworking.
Now I can understand that doing the same thing all the time gets boring but honestly, everyone at the exact same time? That tells me something is either going on or there’s the biggest coincidence in history. I just don’t get it and it’s getting to the point that I just don’t buy it. I want to be entertained. That’s why I’m watching their channels in the first place. Now granted, I’m not paying anything for it so it’s hard to be upset at the individuals, but they are making ad revenue money off of all comers and therefore, they ought to at least try. I’m just not seeing it anymore though. If life gets in the way, fine. Matt Cremona moved and I get that part. What about the rest? What’s their excuse?
Sorry, I just don’t understand. Someone, please explain.
