Woodworking: Doing Stupid Things

May 17th, 2016

This is something I don’t get, to be honest.  In a number of discussions over on a woodworking forum, people were variously looking for opinions on how different people handled different problems and invariably, there is always someone who brings up the most ludicrous possibility, as though we ought to seriously consider it when making decisions.

Here’s a thought… don’t do stupid things! In this most recent example, we were talking about what to do with your chuck key for  your drill press.  I just have a mount on the side of the drill press where I put the chuck after every use and I have never lost or misplaced it.  Others recommended attaching it to the drill press with a chain or cord so it couldn’t go anywhere.  And our invariable idiot chimed in and said that you shouldn’t do that because what happens if you leave the key in the chuck and turn on the machine?

Well what kind of moron is going to do that?  That’s like saying cars are dangerous because what if someone drives over your head while you just so happen to be taking a nap in the middle of the street?  Well don’t do that!  Only an idiot would do that!

Now it’s not always the same person, but people pop up with the most bizarre warnings, not to do things that nobody in their right mind would ever do in the first place.  And then they expect some kind of solution, usually expensive, for their own stupidity.  It’s like those Saw Stop idiots who rally around the expensive safety features of the saw, then immediately take off the blade guard and act irresponsibly around the tool.  You know, if you people would just practice basic safety procedures and common sense, you wouldn’t need the technology in the first place.  And they always say “well, you might make a mistake!”  Sure, like disabling the safety features and not using your brain in the first place!

I’ll never understand people who are idiots, who are apparently proud of their own stupidity and desperately want someone else to save them from the consequences of their ineptitude.  Maybe if these people stopped being stupid, or if we let evolution have it’s way and wiped them from the gene pool, the world would be a much better place.
