Day 2 – Electric Boogaloo.
Serious, I’m getting too old for this shit. As I was talking about with my wife yesterday, my first con, or at least the first one I remember, was San Diego Comicon in 1974, held at the El Cortez Hotel. Her first was SDCC in 1980. We’ve been doing this an absurd amount of time and just being on our feet for as long as these cons run takes a toll a lot faster today than it used to.
But today is the longest and busiest day so we’ll see if we survive.
Something we noticed this year was the singular lack of panels that we cared about sitting through. It’s very skewed toward “So you want to write comics/movies/web series…” We wanted to hit two panels today, one on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and one on DC Comics for kids, but the line to get into the room was absurd so we didn’t bother. Instead, we satin on a panel for the video cast “Critical Roll” , which was fun.
As usual, I wanted to give a view of the scope of the convention, but without being able to upload pictures yet, you’ll have to use your imagination. The dealer’s room is huge, spread out over three connected halls. It’s 22 aisles of vendors, each probably 40-50 vendors on average. That’s a lot of vendors. And while we’re not interested in a lot of it, I noticed that there were a lot of board game vendors this year, which is a bit odd, since just 2 years ago, we looked and there were none.
I know I mentioned the convention center expansion and they are still working on it, but it looks like it will provide a lot more space, if they decide to move other conventions here. Of course, I still think the only place they can move Comicon is Las Vegas, Anaheim isn’t big enough for the con, any more than San Diego is. Plus, trafficwise, it would be a disaster. Still, I give them an A for effort for doing something San Diego never could.
And oh yeah, even though it isn’t Easter weekend, the religious idiots showed up. Just one at the convention itself, but they showed up on Friday night near Disneyland, this time with light-up signs. I am assuming the guy at the con was with them, even though he didn’t have the typical yellow sign. He was arguing with Deadpool when I passed and Deadpool was winning. No surprise there.
Anyhow, pictures incoming on Monday, plus a complete rundown on the haul at the con. So far we’re at 22 Pops, plus lots of other stuff, with lots more on the way. Stay tuned.
