I recently watched part of a video from a guy who spent, I shit you not, 2.5 hours explaining why he thought Fallout 4 was a bad game, or at the very least not the game that he wanted it to be. And this comes after hundreds of hours of playing a game that he finds so inferior.
So why in the hell are you doing that?
Clearly, this guy was looking for an RPG and he ended up getting a shooter with RPG elements, which is exactly what all of Bethesda’s games are. These are not deep, thoughtful character-building games, they are more-or-less on-rails shooters where you have very little choice where you wind up. So why pretend to be surprised at the end product?
He says he loves Skyrim, but Skyrim is exactly the same as Fallout 4. You really have no choice how you will end up. In Skyrim, you are going to be the Dragonborn whether you like it or not. You are going to end up leading the Mage’s College. You are going to kill Alduin. You can’t finish the game without it. You have no choices in the matter. It’s open world in terms of where you can go, but not in terms of what you can do. You do what the game tells you to do eventually. The number of choices you have are very limited and Bethesda sells millions of games to enthusiastic fans.
If you’re not one of them, why not just go play something else? I mean, I’ve reviewed games here that I wasn’t wild about, but I figured that out pretty early on and stopped playing. I didn’t dedicate hundreds of hours of my life to playing a game that I fundamentally dislike. I didn’t start over once I had finished it. That makes no sense. If you don’t like Bethesda games, don’t play them. Stop buying them. Go play something else. It’s okay, nobody will care and you’ll be happier. Why are you torturing yourself playing games you know you’ll hate? Do you just like to complain?
