Where Do Your Dogs Sleep?

November 14th, 2017

Caramel Day One

It recently occurred to my wife and I that our newest dog, Caramel, has never, not once since the day we got her at 6 weeks old, slept through the night somewhere other than on someone’s bed.  Not once.  She’s almost 2 years old now and she has never had to sleep alone.

Now it started out logically, we got her from a friend my my daughters and we weren’t supposed to bring her home until she was 8 weeks old.  Then one day, their friend said “she’s got to go today” and we wound up with a puppy that we simply weren’t prepared for.  So, not knowing if the house was puppy-proofed or not, my wife and I took her to bed and she was perfectly happy under the covers.  That was the middle of October, 2015.

She is one of the few dog’s we’ve had that would sleep through the entire night and not want to go out every couple of hours.  Every night, she’d follow us back to the bedroom and jump up on the bed, so she got to stay.  On very rare occasion, she’d bed down with one of the girls, mostly when my oldest daughter came home from college, but the overwhelming majority of the time, she slept with us and still does.

She loves to cuddle.  She’ll get under the covers and curl up to one of us and go right to sleep.  She’ll continue to sleep all night until one of us gets up.  On weekends, when I’m up early and my wife sleeps in, she’ll come out with me, go outside, then want to go right back to bed.  If someone is sleeping, she wants to be there.

But none of the other dogs do.  They’re perfectly happy to sleep on the couch.  On rare occasion, they might run back there and snooze for an hour or two, but after that, they’re up and scratching at the door to get out.  They don’t have any interest in sticking around.  They just don’t have the patience.

Maybe that’s because Caramel went straight from sleeping with her mother and brothers and sisters to sleeping with us.  She’s never been alone.  She’s always had someone to cuddle with.  If you say “bed”, her ears perk up and she’s down the hall.  During the day, she’s perfectly happy to sleep on the couch with the other dogs, or curl up under my desk when I’m sitting at it, but at night, she has to be in bed with someone or she’ll sit in the hall and scratch at doors and cry.

So what about your dogs?  Let me know in the comments where they sleep and why.  I’d really like to know.
