I loved the first season of Stranger Things, it was one of the best shows I had seen in a very long time. But I had a really, really bad feeling about season 2, mostly because most shows that have an outstanding first season fall apart entirely in the second, because as I’ve said before, most shows blow their load on the first season and have no clue what to do if they’re lucky enough to get renewed.
So I was very wary going into the second season because I figured I was going to be very disappointed.
And wow was I wrong about that!
So let’s get into the second season of Stranger Things and why this continues to be an amazing television series!
A year after the events of the first season, things in Hawkins are starting to get back to normal, or so it seems. Will continues to be haunted by his time in the Upside Down, having what his mother interprets as flashbacks. But are they really? New faces come to Hawkins and it seems Eleven isn’t alone in her special abilities. And where is Eleven? After her disappearance into the Upside Down at the end of the last season, can she get back to the real world and maybe discover who she really is?
This is a somewhat slower burn than the first season, mostly of necessity. The first time around, they had to introduce all of the characters and the world and that’s just not necessary this year. They do spend a little time introducing new characters and exploring Will’s predicament, but the first couple of episodes are just getting us back into the groove. The world is still excellent, it feels like 1984 and they even fixed a couple of the historical gaffes they made last year (Millennium Falcon anyone?). If you’re a fan of 80s music, it’s all here. As last year, it just feels right.
Of course, I had a problem with how Hopper treated Eleven at the beginning, although I know he’s not a very father figure, even though he has an unseen daughter and certainly not particularly good with children, but his behavior really drove Eleven away, but without that, a lot of the story couldn’t have taken place so I’m willing to forgive it.
In the end, while I was kind of hesitant about this season, it wound up being the far superior show. Season 2 was amazing. They fixed all of the problems that I had with the first season, including resolving Barb’s death, getting rid of Steve, even though he was sort of redeemed in the end, and getting Nancy together with Jonathan, and getting Hopper and Joyce… well, closer in the end at least. And the last scenes in the finale were epic. They couldn’t have been better. Now I’m wondering where they’re going to go next, because I’ve heard rumors that they’ve renewed Stranger Things for an additional 2 seasons. Sign me up. I want this to go on as long as the Duffer Brothers can make it this good.
