TV Thursday: Scream: The Series Season 2 (2016)

September 29th, 2016

Last year, I was pretty critical of Scream: The Series, saying that the characters acted very stupidly and the show completely lost the self-aware nature of the movie series.  I hoped that this year, things would be different, that they’d learn from their mistakes and make the series better.

Unfortunately, that’s not what happened.  So let’s see what actually happened in this 12-episode series that’s supposed to make you scream.Picking up a few months after the end of season one, Emma has been away at an asylum, recovering from the trauma she suffered at the end of the first season. But when she comes back, bad things start to happen and Audrey, who we found out had a connection to the Lakewood Slasher from the first season, gets roped into helping the new killer or else he’ll reveal the truth.

Um… yeah.  They brought in a number of new characters, considering that a lot died in the first season, but it became painfully obvious that they were just set dressing and axe-fodder.  Everything continued to revolve around Emma and Brandon James and the killer from year one.  This time, there was a secret partner that is seeking revenge, donning the same mask and using the same tactics.  There were new showrunners this year, which made the story slightly more cohesive, but the characters were really no better.

How stupid were they?  Okay, I know these are idiot millennials, but time and time again, they were fooled by the killer sending fake text messages, sending them walking into traps over and over again.  Seriously, how can you be that dumb?  And then, in the last episode when Emma and Audrey are arrested for the murder of Brooke’s father and the killer frees them, they go into hiding and immediately call everyone they know and tell them where they are.  Are we supposed to think that the police aren’t watching their friends?  Apparently not! Why not?

And of course, the ending is just stupid.  Not only is it blatantly obvious who the killer was, but he’s only unmasked by making an absurdly stupid mistake. This is a killer who is depicted as being ten steps ahead of everyone the whole series, only to completely screw up in the end.  And then he spends all of the time he ought to have been killing Emma and Audrey explaining his whole plan.  It was just dumb.

I have no idea if they’re going to do another season.  They certainly left it open for one but I don’t know if I’d be on board to give them one more shot.  As long as all of the characters act like idiots, I couldn’t care less who lives and who dies and without that, what’s the point of sitting through another dozen episodes?  It could have been better.  It should have been better.  It just made every single mistake that they had in the first season over again.  Dumb characters, dumb plot twists, it just didn’t leave me wanting any more.
