TV Thursday: 12 Monkeys Season 3 (2017)

June 29th, 2017

I have no idea why, but Syfy decided to just dump the entire season of 12 Monkeys over a 3 day period, sort of like Netflix does, only a little longer.  Supposedly this summer, Syfy is rebranding itself back into an actual science fiction network, so it could be that they were trying to clear summer shows.  After all, they’ve already greenlit a final season for 12 Monkeys next year so it isn’t like they’re trying to burn off the episodes like I initially thought.  That said, this really isn’t a very good show anymore and maybe it would have been better to just let it die.  But let’s look at the season anyhow, shall we?

This season, they deal with the issue of family, as Cassie and Cole find themselves the parents of the Witness.  But honestly, this just comes straight out of left field as the Witness seems to have been shoehorned into the series and in the end, really doesn’t matter much.  So why did we waste the entire season worrying about it?  In the end, the “Witness” supposedly sacrifices himself and the apocalypse cult still continues when he finds out he wasn’t the witness at all.  Why?  It’s just dumb.

And speaking of the Witness, what kind of a stupid name is Athan?  As much some say the penultimate episode was great, it just bored me.  I was never invested in the Athan character, hence I never cared about his one true love.  In fact, it struck me as very childish and immature that he completely imprinted on this one woman, to the point that he tried to save her more than 600 times. Maybe that’s because he had such a crap upbringing, but this is not someone that I want anything to do with, nor do I care to understand him.

Honestly, this show is all over the place.  Yes, it’s a time travel series and you expect them to go to different time periods, but it’s just absurdly confusing anymore.  There doesn’t seem to be a strong narrative thread like there was in the first season.  People seem to think it’s amazing, but I think it’s going straight down hill.  And that’s because, as is the case in most of these shows, they had no clue what they wanted to do in the long run so they just keep tacking on more absurd concepts with each successive season.  Show co-creator Terry Matalas certainly had no clue about the Witness when the series started. It’s just “what crazy stuff can we do this season?” and I honestly hate that. The show just doesn’t hang together from season to season.

So it’s probably a good thing that Syfy is dumping it next year.  They always kill shows by their fifth season because they’d have to take over funding the shows if they continued beyond that, so you’ll never see a scripted show go more than 5 years on Syfy.  This is something that started off strong and wound up being a waste of time, at least this season.  Maybe they’ll pull out the last season and do something amazing, but I’m not holding my breath.  We need to see shows that have a strong multi-year plot.  We just don’t see that anymore.
