Tired of the Grind - Cephus' Corner

Tired of the Grind

October 17th, 2017

I know I’ve talked about this before in relation to MMOs, but I think I’ve about hit my limit with regard to another form of gaming, the Android app.  Most games out there are just grind-heavy, not to keep you playing the game longer, but to get you to buy premium products and services to get around the time-wasting efforts that you have to go through to actually get anywhere.

And it doesn’t matter if it’s a free game or not, even the paid games are like this. You have to shell out more money to buy credits or coins or stars or whatever their premium crap is, otherwise you spend your time waiting, staring at a screen, for some arbitrary amount of time to go by, before you can play the game again.

This is certainly nothing new, it’s been a part of the gaming world for decades.  I remember playing Roller Coaster Tycoon, a game where you built amusement parks, where you just sat there and waited for the money to roll in so you could build more.  I never cared about the challenges, I cared about building so when Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 finally unlocked free building, I was thrilled.  I spent all of my time doing that.  Infinite money and infinite resources, I’d build park after park after park, just for the fun of it.  I could build in my schedule, not on the game’s.

But that doesn’t make a lot of money for developers who realized that playing on people’s frustration could make them a buck.  Sorry, I’m tired of playing that game.  I just want a game that I can play as much as I want to play, when I want to play it, without having to throw you a couple of bucks to unlock all the artificial gates.

That’s exactly why, when I started my new game in Fallout 4, I immediately cheated, got all the resources and money I needed to build anything I wanted and started having fun without jumping through hoops.  I don’t care about hoops, I care about fun.

Now I’ve been playing the online app version of Roller Coaster Tycoon and sorry to say, it sucks.  It has all the problems of the paid offline version, along with every single problem that online apps have.  It’s all waiting, no fun, unless you want to throw them a ton of money to get around the artificial delays.  I don’t.  Give me a game that I can just build, I’ll pay you whatever you ask for it, but this?  I’m done.  It just isn’t any fun.

And none of the other games are either.  I’ve gone through a ton of them, where I’ll download something, play for a week or two, then delete it because it’s just mindless grinding or waiting or paying to even be able to play the game.  Pass.  Even games that I’ve played for years and years are getting more and more grindy.  I’m about to delete those and lose all of the progress I’ve had, just because I’m tired of sitting around.  Let me play, damn it.  Otherwise, you can take a flying leap.

Grind has become a complete waste of time.  I’m done with it.  I need fun when I want it, not fun when developers decide I ought to receive it.  I am not engaging in microtransactions for  your game.  Come up with a better business plan.  I’m out.  Screw you all.
