They just did a Dice Tower podcast where they talked about gaming hype and how that affects your decision to buy a game. A lot of people, especially people who are in the industry, really like hype, but I was a little surprised at how many people openly hate hype, especially with the prevalence of “the cult of the new” thinking in the hobbyist board game market.
So what do I think of hype? What the heck do you think?
I detest hype of any kind, not just in gaming, but in anything. The more that people talk about a thing, the less interest I have in it. I don’t know why that is, really, I know that when I was much younger, I didn’t mind hype, but today, I just don’t care. When something comes out, I either see it or don’t see it, I buy or don’t buy it, based entirely on credible reviews that I trust, not based on hype.
But let’s separate honest interest and buzz from hype. This is really where I have problems with the “cult of the new” nonsense. There is a difference between talking about a game because it’s actually good and talking about a game just because it is new. The former is positive, the latter is not. If someone that I respect has actually played this game and actually has an intelligent reason for enjoying the game, great. I’ll accept that recommendation in my decision making process. But if it’s just random people online, most of whom have never even played the game, they’re just keeping the hype train going, what’s the point in caring what they have to say?
But what is the difference between buzz and hype? Well, let’s look at Star Wars. Now keep in mind that I am writing this before the new movie comes out, but everything that you are hearing about a movie before it comes out, all of that is hype. It’s just people talking about something they really have no clue about. Once it comes out, once people have direct experience with it and can make up their own minds, that’s honest buzz. I care about honest buzz. I hate hype.
So anyhow, for what it’s worth, that’s my take on the question. What do you think? Let me know your views in the comments.
