There is more to tokusatsu in Japan than Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, there are plenty of non-Toei shows that grace the airwaves and provide rubber-suited goodness.
This isn’t one of them. This time out, I take a look at the 13-episode series from 2013, created by Keita Amemiya and Tohshiki Inoue, Shougeki Gourigan.

I’ve just finished watching the first seven episodes of the new Super Sentai show, Express Sentai ToQGer. Yes, I’m going to spell it like that because it’s easier than typing out Tokkyuger all the time. Of course, by the time anyone reads this, I’ll probably have seen up to episode 13, plus the Express Sentai ToQGer Vs. Kamen Rider Gaim Spring Vacation Combining Special, I guess that’s the problem being ridiculously prolific.
So here are my first thoughts of the series.

There aren’t a lot of tokusatsu podcasts out there, there are only two that I know of in fact. One of them, the first one I ever started listening to, kind of drives me crazy because the hosts are complete tokusatsu traditionalists and on a recent episode, they really went into why they want all tokusatsu, specifically Kamen Rider and Super Sentai, to be pretty much the same year after year after year. I absolutely do not want that at all.

Not much to say here, just looking at the mecha design for the new Super Sentai show, Express Sentai Tokkyuger and honestly, did they just watch the 1980 mecha show Space Runaway Ideon? Am I the only one to have noticed this?
Take a look:
Looks like a direct rip-off to this:
So what gives? Did they seriously think nobody would notice?

I wrote previously about the complaints in the tokusatsu community about the newest Kamen Rider series, called Kamen Rider Gaim, and how much they hated the theme and pretty much everything about it. Of course, they hadn’t ever seen a single episode, they were just reacting to some of the information that was coming out about the new series and I was pretty clear that I was going to wait and see. Well, I did and here’s my initial reaction to the first seven episodes of Kamen Rider Gaim.
