TV Thursday: 100 Years of Horror (1996)

October 26th, 2017

There really wasn’t anything good for Halloween on this year, and with TV shows ending left and right, we decided to hit up Amazon Prime to see if there was anything but awful low-budget movies to watch.  We came across this, a 26-episode series that aired back in 1996, hosted by Christopher Lee, that detailed the first 100 years of horror movies worldwide.  Classic horror?  Sign me up!

Bad Movie Review: Einstein’s God Model (2016)

October 22nd, 2017

It could have had potential, I’ll give it that, but 2016’s Einstein’s God Model, directed by Phillip T. Johnson, just never delivered on the promise.

Now this is an indie movie that has been around the indie circuit and has some things to recommend it.  Some of the acting, although certainly not all of it, is decent, the idea, as I said, has potential and the visuals are interesting, but I really think the whole thing falls apart in the end into incoherence.

So let’s take a look at a movie that I started off with high hopes for, but which just couldn’t make it to the end.

TV Thursday: The Strain Season 4 (2017)

October 19th, 2017

I tried to like The Strain, I really did. I loved the books by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan and I had high hopes that when the series premiered on FX, that it would be a reasonably faithful adaptation of the stories in the books.

Now why in the world would I ever think that?  So now that we come to the end of the road, and thankfully so, here are my thoughts that are the slow-motion disaster that was The Strain.

Tired of the Grind

October 17th, 2017

I know I’ve talked about this before in relation to MMOs, but I think I’ve about hit my limit with regard to another form of gaming, the Android app.  Most games out there are just grind-heavy, not to keep you playing the game longer, but to get you to buy premium products and services to get around the time-wasting efforts that you have to go through to actually get anywhere.

Belated Movie Review: Wonder Woman (2017)

October 15th, 2017

I’ve actually fallen way, way behind in doing movie reviews of late. It’s not that I haven’t wanted to, but there have been so many movies coming out, both the good and the bad variety, that I’ve completely lost track of what I have to do. So now that it’s hit Bluray, here’s my look at the 2017 Wonder Woman.

Now a lot of people seem to think that this has broken the DC curse, an actually good movie that goes far above garbage like Man of Steel, Batman vs. Superman and Suicide Squad. But is it really?  Because I’m sure I’ll have an unpopular opinion.  So let’s take a look.

Bad Movie Review: The Recall (2017)

October 14th, 2017

It’s bad movie time again.  This time, we sat down to watch The Recall, a 2017 low budget horror/sci-fi movie by director Mauro Borelli.  And yes, it looks low-budget, although not in a Birdemic way, but it just comes across as cheap and rather uninspired, typical Syfy fare.

How they got Wesley Snipes to act in this, I have no idea.  That must have been the majority of their budget.  I guess when you have to pay off the IRS, you’ll do just about anything.

So let’s look at The Recall and try to recall if it has a memorable plot at all.

TV Thursday: Killjoys Season 3 (2017)

October 12th, 2017

I’ll be honest, there’s always been something about this show that struck me wrong and I have no idea what it is.  Given a choice between first season Killjoys and first season Dark Matter, another show that started at the same time on Syfy, I’d pick Dark Matter every time.  But you can look at my review of that show where I explain where I think it fell apart.

But this one isn’t much better, even though it’s gotten a 2-season pickup, after which it dies because nothing on Syfy ever lasts longer than 5 seasons (Syfy has to start paying people more if they do).

So here’s my take on the third season of Killjoys and why… it just isn’t that good anymore.

The Safety Police

October 8th, 2017

I know, this is getting old, but this has been an ongoing discussion over on the woodworking forum and I find it bizarre to watch how many people will actually argue against personal responsibility for their own safety and for the nanny-state.  I find it all absurd.

To recap, there have been a number of posts made for people who supposedly severely injured themselves with a table saw, all while doing something utterly idiotic, and instead of blaming themselves, they blame the saw. These people are morons.

TV Thursday: Dark Matter Season 3 (2017)

October 5th, 2017

You know, I really used to like this show, far more than it’s “sister” show Killjoys which started around the same time. But Dark Matter soon lost the charm of the crew of strangers with amnesia trying to recover their pasts.  And seriously, I am not remotely sorry that this got cancelled.  It deserved it. That’s something sad to say about a show that once had so much promise.

So let’s look at the final season of Dark Matter and see what went wrong.
