Roleplaying Made Easy

January 12th, 2016

I’ve been roleplaying for a very long time, since the advent of modern gaming back in 1974 with Chainmail, the precursor of Dungeons & Dragons, so you might say I’ve got some experience on the subject, but as time has gone on, it has been more and more difficult to get new people involved in gaming, it seems nobody has the patience for long rulesets and lots of involved planning and thinking. Of course, that’s really where my love of gaming lies, I like complex thinking and planning and, because of my experience, long, involved rulesets don’t bother me a bit.

However, maybe there is a better way.

Game Hype

January 10th, 2016

They just did a Dice Tower podcast where they talked about gaming hype and how that affects your decision to buy a game.  A lot of people, especially people who are in the industry, really like hype, but I was a little surprised at how many people openly hate hype, especially with the prevalence of “the cult of the new” thinking in the hobbyist board game market.

So what do I think of hype?  What the heck do you think?

Comic Review: A-Force #01-05 (2015)

January 9th, 2016

Oh look, another Secret Wars tie-in!  Who would have thought?  This time around, we have what amounts of an all-female Avengers team, living in the Battleworld land of Arcadia.  Led by She-Hulk, the place is a paradise, but not everyone is happy and you’ll never guess who it might be?

So let’s take a look at this 5-issue mini that puts together a pretty cool team of Battleworld’s favorite female heroes.

What Went Wrong With Doctor Who?

January 5th, 2016

Sure, it’s easy to just say “Steven Moffat” and leave it at that, but as time has gone on, both under the control of Russell T. Davies and Moffat, I have been increasingly dissatisfied with what they were doing with the Doctor and I think I’ve figured out a couple of things. So read on and see what I think the franchise has done wrong and why I doubt it can ever be fixed.

Movie Review: Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015)

January 3rd, 2016

This is one of those “hey, a zombie movie, want to watch?” kind of movies. I’ve seen a bunch of these, random B-movies where some group of people have to survive the zombie apocalypse with comedic effect.  Some of them are good, like Shawn of the Dead, some of them are not.  So what can I make of Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse?  Let’s find out.

Comic Review: X-Tinction Agenda #1-4 (2015)

January 2nd, 2016

Oh look, it’s another story reused during the Secret Wars event!  The original X-tinction Agenda took place nearly 25 years ago, but we’re back to revisit the tale.  But like just about all of the Secret Wars tie-ins, it’s going to be a mixed bag.  So let’s go take a look at Genosha and the deadly virus that ravages the land and see if this is one of those good cross-overs or one of those bad cross-overs.  See you on the other side.
