Comic Review: Justice League United #1-4 (2014)

January 31st, 2015

Justice-League-United-1Oh look, it’s DC’s Alpha Flight!  A new super team based in Canada, this version of the Justice League fights for truth, justice and the Canadian way.

Or something like that.

DC didn’t make this an easy book to pick up since they start with issue 2 of the Justice League Canada storyline.  I didn’t have part 1, which was in Justice League United #0 so I just went with it, that doesn’t mean I wasn’t confused, just that I had no choice.  I’m not a big DC fan anyhow, confusion is pretty much the name of the game when I read most of these stories.

So here goes my look at four of the five parts of the Justice League Canada story arc.

Boardgame Review: Cards Against Humanity

January 29th, 2015

Cards Against HumanityThere are some games that are just wrong.  They are tasteless, offensive and morally reprehensible.  Oh, and they are funny, very, very funny. That’s the case with this game, Cards Against Humanity.

Essentially, it’s Apples to Apples with no moral compass.  It’s a party game for adults where you try to come up with the funniest, raunchiest answer to questions.  It’s quick to learn, easy to play and, with the right group of people, a lot of fun.  But is it something that you should spend your gaming dollars on?  Let’s see.

Comic Review: DOW – Life After Logan (2014)

January 27th, 2015

Life After Logan CoverOh look, it’s another Death of Wolverine tie-in! This time out, a trio of stories told from different perspectives about how the characters saw Wolverine.  I think that’s an interesting take, at least, so I’ll have to handle the stories separately, as vignettes on the life of Logan and how life might go on after he’s gone.

Therefore, let’s take a look at this one-shot, Life After Logan, and see how different creative teams tell different stories about different characters, all paying homage to the life of The Wolverine.

Belated Reviews: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

January 25th, 2015

TASM2I’ll be honest right up front, I didn’t like the first Amazing Spider-Man movie. In fact, I pretty much hated it.  I thought Andrew Garfield was completely wrong for the part, I couldn’t stand Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, I thought they played the character of Peter Parker completely and totally wrong.  It wasn’t anywhere close to accurate to the comics, it was Emo Spider-Man.

So now that I’ve finally got the Blu Ray for the second movie, is it any better or is it just as bad as the first?  Let’s find out as I delve into The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Comic Review: Fantastic Four #1-5 (2014)

January 24th, 2015

Fantastic Four 1 CoverOh look, Marvel rebooted yet another comic, are we surprised?  With the change to Marvel Now and DC’s New 52, just about every comic from the big two has been revamped, rebranded and renumbered whether it needed to be or not.

I had honestly intended to review Matt Fraction’s take on the Fantastic Four, but as with a lot of things, time is rarely on my side.  Therefore, I’ll just have to make do with this new title and the first story arc called The Fall of the Fantastic Four.

Read on, won’t you?

App Review: Age of Pyramids

January 22nd, 2015

Age of PyramidsI haven’t written about app gaming in a very long time, not because I’ve stopped doing it but because I haven’t really started playing any new games.  I have stopped playing a couple, things that I’ve given up on and there’s even more that I’m likely to give up on in the near future and when that happens, I sometimes poke around to find something new to do.

This is the most recent one I’ve tried, Ancient Egypt: Age of Pyramids.

Comic Review: DOW – Deadpool & Captain America (2014)

January 20th, 2015

Death_of_Wolverine_Deadpool_&_Captain_AmericaWhile I didn’t particularly like the Death of Wolverine mini-series, what is even worse is the onslaught of tie-in titles  designed to do nothing but make money for Marvel.  So far, there are four tie-in minis that exist just to show character reactions to the temporary disappearance of Logan from the mainstream Marvel Universe.  At least this one is a one-shot that explores the loss from the perspective of  Deadpool & Captain America.

Ah well, let’s take a look at it anyhow, shall we?

Boardgame Review: Pandemic

January 18th, 2015

pandemic-2013-board-gameThis falls into my “holy crap, why didn’t I review this before?” list because I should have done it a while back but entirely forgot.  It isn’t because Pandemic is a bad game, most certainly it isn’t, it just fell through the cracks like so many things do when I’m absurdly busy.

However, this classic cooperative game by Matt Leacock really does deserve my attention and my review, so here I go, saving the world, one cube at a time, here’s my take on Pandemic.

Comic Review: Savage Hulk #1-4 (2014)

January 17th, 2015

Savage Hulk 1 CoverNow here’s an interesting idea.  Take an old X-Men story from their mostly unpopular pre-94 days and expand it into something potentially intriguing.  The original run of the Uncanny X-Men ended at issue #66, followed up with reprints from #67-93 and culminating in the series reboot starting in Giant Size X-Men #1. This takes the story that played out in #66 and gives us where it might have gone had the X-Men continued with new stories.

So let’s take a look at the first arc of Savage Hulk and see what’s down the rabbit hole, shall we?

TV Thursday: Doctor Who Christmas Special (2014)

January 15th, 2015

doctor-who-christmas-special-videoYeah, this is late but when you’re writing nearly a month ahead of time, what do you expect?  As critical as I’ve been of Peter Capaldi’s Doctor Who run, I still sat down to watch the Christmas Special, mainly because there wasn’t much else to watch, partially because it was the last appearance of Clara and I hate Clara with a passion, and just a little bit because I wanted something to rant about.

So is that what actually happened?  Let’s leap into my look at Last Christmas.
