Another Wednesday, another list.  I will admit, I’m getting really, really behind, I haven’t had much time recently to read what I’m getting, as you can tell from my lack of many comics reviews.  Okay, you can’t tell that really because the blog is written so far in advance, but you *WILL* notice that over the next  couple of weeks.  I really need to sit down and read some comics!

Building a Better World Part 6: The Future of Human Politics

October 23rd, 2013

politician

It seems to me that there are only a couple of logical political systems to which anyone can ascribe, at least talking in very general terms.  It all comes down to who is in power and how they achieve and maintain it.  You can have a democratic system, where the people are put in charge through some mechanism or another.  You can have an autocratic system, whereby some individual or group is in charge by fiat and this can include monarchies, theocracies and the like.  You can have some form of communal system, whereby people have no central government.  You can also have an anarchistic system, whereby nobody runs the show, everyone makes decisions on their own.

This time on Building a Better World, I look at the state of human politics in the far distant future.

Why I Don’t Read Manga

October 22nd, 2013

mangaMy wife does a short weekly podcast on manga news and reviews and she always has a problem coming up with a lot of information to report on.  Outside of the convention season, there aren’t a lot of regular announcements, new manga, etc. coming out of the industry so she’s often left with just reviewing something she read recently and while there’s nothing wrong with that at all, it’s often more difficult and time consuming than other avenues.  I suggested that she might look to have some of her manga-reviewing friends on the show, but she doesn’t want to do that, she isn’t even interested in having me or our daughter on to talk about manga, but that got me thinking about why I really don’t read much manga today and thought it would make a good post.

Comic Review: Wolverine – Japan’s Most Wanted #1-13

October 21st, 2013

Japan's Most WantedMarvel’s online and digital comics have had mixed success, which I suppose is why they really haven’t put forth much effort in that realm, as opposed to DC, which has been putting out tons of digital-only content.  However, they’ve released a 13-part digital-only story, set in the comics continuity, called Wolverine: Japan’s Most Wanted.  It was released over 13 consecutive weeks.  Is it any good?  Let’s check it out.

Non-Sport Cards: Trouble Trolls

October 20th, 2013

Trouble TrollsThere was a time when, Garbage Pail Kids were all the rage.  I’ve talked about my collection in the past and while it’s absurdly large to post images of (well over 80 pages of cards), there were quite a few knock-offs of the series, made by other companies, and Topps itself, who wanted a slice of the GPK pie. Another property that was popular at the time were those stupid little plastic trolls with long florescent hair, made by Norfin, and in 1993, card company Classic decided to combine the two and create the Trouble Trolls.

Belated Review: Iron Man 3 (2013)

October 19th, 2013

IM3_wallpaper1

I love Iron Man.  I always have and I always will.  He’s one of my favorite superheroes, along with Spider-Man and Daredevil and Iron Man 1 is my favorite superhero movie of all time, bar none. Therefore, you can imagine how excited I was when Iron Man 3 came out in theaters, even though I never, ever, ever, ever go to theaters to see anything, I always wait for the DVD.  Now I have it.  Now, 6 months later, I’ve seen it.  And…

My Problems with Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game

October 18th, 2013

Star Wars X-Wing

Not long ago, I wrote an article about not being a wargamer and I mentioned not being into miniatures as one of my reasons for not really getting the whole wargaming thing. However, miniatures are kind of a big thing to a lot of people, although I don’t get it and this game, Star Wars X-Wing: The Miniatures Game is sweeping the gaming community.

I just don’t get it.

Not-a-Review: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)

October 16th, 2013

Jay_and_Silent_Bob_Strike_Back_(theatrical_poster)

Recently, after I put my wife to bed, I’ve been sitting down to watch a movie. We have a massive collection and many of them, due to a lack of time mostly, get watched once or twice and then forgotten. Therefore, I’ve been going through the collection and picking a movie here and there that I haven’t seen for a while and last night was the 2001 Kevin Smith vehicle, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

This is not a review, I will not be discussing what I thought of the film, looking at it’s good and bad points or describing what happens in the film.  I just want to talk about a few things, most importantly Jay and Silent Bob themselves.
